Today, I reached my goal of 4000 words on my short story. I’m not done yet, for I’m still writing the first section. So far, the story is coming together.

A supporting character took an intriguing turn in her development causing conflict with the main character. It looks interesting. I’m looking forward to completing the story.

This past weekend, I started reading a new romance novel, and the story grabbed me right away. On Saturday, I read 32 pages and on Sunday; I read two more chapters. (Tonight, I’m planning on reading a chapter, before bed.)

Also, I did some editing on a story and book review. Then, I watched the last quarter of the Super Bowl, that’s the only time I watch football. Supergirl’s episode was a repeat, and there was nothing else on tv.

That was my weekend.

The Queen’s Poisoner Review

I enjoyed reading The Queen’s Poisoner by Jeff Wheeler. This book was different from other fantasy novels I have read. The story followed an eight-year-old Owen taken away from his family to live at the castle with the king.

At first, I wasn’t sure about the novel, if I wanted a read about an eight-year-old boy, what he might have to endure without his parents. I am glad I did, for it was an excellent read.

The Beginning

The story opens where Owen’s parents made the wrong choice by going against the king. They lost one child because the King ordered his death. Owen fate was sealed, to be taken away and forced to live at the palace.

After that, Owen’s story started with the journey heading to the king’s castle. I could relate with Owen being terrified and dealing with the pain being separated from his parents.

The Middle

Once Ankarette was introduced and Owen’s transformation begins. She helps him to adjust living at the castle, teaches how to thrive, and lessons on politics.

Evie was another great character that was introduced halfway through the story. She was a strong-will little girl taught Owen to be brave in dangerous situations.

The Ending

The climax of the book had me reading into the late hours; I wanted to see how Owen would save his family from the King. It was awesome!

The Ending was great. It wrapped up Owen’s storyline and that leads to the second book in the series.

World Building

Another thing I like about the novel, the author took his time to develop the culture and explained certain meanings to Owen. I had no trouble understanding terms and descriptions.

The descriptions are amazing and there were times I felt I was with young Owen and walked with him on his journey. The way the rivers and the fountains such detail that portray the spiritual meaning.

I’m looking forward to reading book two.

Today, on First Reads, I found two novels I have put on my February Reading list. I read the blurbs and reviews, so I took a chance.

The first book is called Blood for Blood by Victoria Selman. According to the blurb: the story is about a woman profiler targeted by a serial killer. It looks like an interesting read of a good chase. The Amazon’s reviews have a high rating, but the Goodreads’ reviews are lower. I hope the story won’t be a huge disappointment.

The second book is called The Killer Collective by Barry Eisler. According to the blurb: the story is about a detective who is a target for a hit but it goes wrong. She must figure out who and why. The reviews on Amazon and Goodreads have high ratings. It looks like a fast-paced and a fascinating read.

It has been cold here with a brief warm-up, before another major outbreak of bitter cold arrives. Tomorrow, I will do errands.

Next week, I’m planning on writing, for my goal is to write half of my short story. I already have 1,000 words done.

This weekend, I want to finish reading The Lost Starship, and to work on my review of The Queen’s Poisoner.

Perhaps, I may get a head start on some spring cleaning too. Spring will be here soon. That means more work outside.

Those are my goals for next week and trying to stay warm too.

Jan 21, 2019

Last night, I watched Supergirl on the CW, and I’m a fan of the show since the first season. The fourth season has brought many changes as the storyline is heading in a new direction.

For me, this has been a frustrating season to watch. The theme seems to be when Kara wins, and then she loses something valuable in her personal life.

Kara might lose her sister. I wonder what the future holds for her. There’s Supergirl’s double in Russia and is training for something, but what? Last night’s episode indicated that.

Since Alex’s memory was altered how will that affect Alex and Kara’s relationship. It may be for an episode. Col. Haley wants Supergirl’s identity that’s threatening Kara’s future.

Then, Brainy was building a new support team for Supergirl. Perhaps, he knows something about what Kara will face since he is from the future?

A lot of uncertainty is hanging over Kara, and next week’s episode looks promising.

Amazon had a recommendation for a novel for me. So, I checked out. It is:

Mark of the Raven by Morgan L. Busse.

The book cover was fascinating, the blurb hooked me, and the price was under a dollar. The reviews on Amazon and Goodreads are good with high ratings. So, I brought the novel. It is on my February’s reading list for there’s another book I want to finish.

Classified Christmas Mission Review

Lynnette Eason is one of my favorite authors for she keeps me guessing and plants little clues in her stories. I always find myself wondering and pondering her stories when I am not reading them.

She is a Christian Suspense Author. Her stories are clean, free from foul language, and does not preach. She focuses on the characters in tough situations, relying on God to endure.

Classified Christmas Mission by Lynnette Eason is the fourth book in the series Wrangler’s Corner.

It delivered an excellent story. I was hooked from the beginning to the end and read it over Christmas.

Amber Starke had been on assignment for CIA when her friend was murdered; now, she is running for her life with her friend’s six-year-old son when the story opens. Did I mention the little boy is autistic? Amber has her hands full.

She returns to her hometown during a nasty snowstorm is shot at, resulting in a car crash. There she encounters Deputy Lance Goode.

Amber and Lance develop a romantic relationship by moving past their hurt and focusing on God getting through their dangerous journey.

Since this is book 4, there is no need to worry for Eason does a wonderful job of providing the back-story without bogging down the pace.

I am planning on reading more of this series. The series is worth checking out.

The Hundredth Queen review

I finished reading The Hundredth Queen by Emily King and is the first book in a series of four books so far. I found it was an interesting, a gripping read, and looking forward to reading more of the series.

The story is about an orphan girl named, Kalinda plagued with fevers that live at the temple. With other orphan girls run by the sisterhood in the far remote area of the realm.

I like that the author took her time without killing the suspense allowing the reader to develop a relationship with Kalinda and experiencing her struggles. I don’t normally read stories that have an India feel. Ms. King did an excellent job explaining the meanings and symbols without bogging down the story.

The first person point-of-view, told through the eyes of Kalinda, giving the tale more tension and danger. I understood her struggles, desires, and fears. While Kalinda goes through her journey becoming the queen. I read more wanting to discover what will happen next.

However, the ending was disappointing. It wrapped everything for the novel, but the ending left me emotionally hanging.

I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
